How to unlock Your Vehicle

Modern electronic key fobs offer superior convenience and performance to a manual key. However, they do require batteries that will eventually wear out and need to be replaced. If your Volvo key fob has started to work intermittently, that's an indication that the battery is depleted and will need replacement in the near future.

There are easy steps you can follow to replace your Volvo key fob battery at your own expense. First, locate a clean work surface to perform the procedure. Lay out all the tools you require. Locate the battery's hatch and make sure that it is set to "open." Make use of a flathead screwdriver or coin or another similar tool to make the hatch open. Then, carefully remove the battery by lifting the side closest to the hook for the key-ring. Make sure that you use rubber gloves to protect the contacts or the clips.

Place the new battery into the socket after the previous one is removed. Ensure that the positive side of the battery is facing upwards and the clips are all seated. Slide the cover towards the key-ring portion until it becomes loose and is able to slide off. Then, you can remove the cover and reveal the key blade, which is hidden inside. This can be used to unlock your car from the driver's door if you have lost or broken the key fob.

How to Change the Battery

Locate the small slot that used to house the backup/emergency key fob made of metal. Inject the blade of a screwdriver or prybar tool into this slot and gently pry the rear of the fob open. Once the fob is opened you can locate the CR2032 3V battery and take it off. Replace the battery, then snap together the fob.

Note: Certain older Volvo models use a different type of battery that is called the CR2025. CR2025 batteries have the thickness of 7/10ths one millimeter lower than a CR2032, so you'll need to be very careful when replacing your battery.

The key fob you have is equipped with a transponder that's been programmed specifically for your Volvo. When you insert the key fob into the ignition barrel a transponder chip reads the code and compares it with the one stored in the start inhibitor module of your vehicle. If the codes don't match and your car doesn't start, it won't. This is an essential anti-theft feature that prevents your Volvo car from starting if you use the wrong key.

If you lose your key in the event of a loss, you'll need to take it to a dealer to get it replaced, and your car programmed. This procedure can take as long as 10 days and cost you a considerable amount of money. You can save money by programming your computer. You can find all the necessary information in the owner's manual or on the internet. Remove the logo and nonlogo covers and lay your key fob on a clean surface.
